Critical Role Campaign 4 Introduces the Fighters Party

Since the launch of the fourth campaign, recently appointed game master Brennan Mulligan has maintained audience suspense with extensive world-building, a wide array of characters, and a exciting storyline including celestial beings, demons, and dark forces increasing in power within Dol-Makjar.

Warning: Spoilers for Episode 3 of Campaign 4 are included.

The Warrior Group Revealed

The third episode finished on a major cliffhanger and presented the initial group of heroes who will separate from the main group to undertake their independent quest, separate from the additional parties.

This warrior group features the determined fighter (brought to life by Travis Willingham), the nimble rogue (Laura Bailey), the fierce warrior (Whitney), Wicander Halovar (Sam), and Kattigan (the actor).

Why Split the Party?

Given a large ensemble, it was obvious from the outset that having everyone at the same party would be unfeasible.

That’s why, the first four episodes of the new season serve as an Prelude, intertwining the personal journeys before splitting into three smaller tables: Warriors, Strategists, and Explorers.

The Nature of the Soldiers Table

As described by the Dungeon Master, the Soldiers table is for participants who are drawn to a typically action-packed combat and conflict-driven gameplay experience where peaceful solutions are scarce.

Upon first impression, figures such as the squeamish cleric Wicander Halovar might appear mismatched, but the actions of episode 3 demonstrate why these particular heroes are best suited for the Soldiers table.

Why They Must Go

First, the team knows exactly where to head next after a intense first encounter with the antagonists.

A former ally of the deceased character—whose demise started the narrative’s action—used The Crow Keepers for his own means, invading Thjazi’s hideout, striking Thimble, and stealing all the magical artifacts to dispose of.

The antagonist then settled his obligations and ran away to a fortified location in the remote area, above Dol-Makjar, with Teor’s brother pursuing him.

Character Drivers

Secondly, each character has a individual motive to leave the city the urban setting:

  • Thimble, as the companion and best friend, seeks revenge.
  • The adventurer is familiar with Timmony and cautions that it is a nasty environment.
  • Tyranny and Wicander, having defied his relatives’ demands to kill the fighter and instead rescued him, have nowhere else to go.
  • Yet, their position as key figures in House Halovar could assist the team access locations they usually can’t.
  • Moreover, Teor swore a eternal obligation to The cleric for his rescue and will now follow him anywhere.

Pursued by Authorities

In addition, all of them are wanted by the rulers that govern the setting for a variety of reasons, making remaining behind too risky:

  • The rogue and The hero are notorious outlaws.
  • The warrior and The healer turned against House Halovar and the legion of demons they are allied with.
  • The fighter is targeted for elimination by the family.

This means them few options but to journey toward the remote area in quest for the traitor.

Upcoming Developments

Based on the recent installment’s Cooldown, we learn that the Soldiers table won’t be around in the upcoming installment, leaving the rest of the participants to assemble the Seekers and Strategists parties.

Fans can anticipate learning which characters will be assigned to which table in the season’s concluding setup installment, streaming live on next week.
