The EU might “act quickly and firmly” against what it calls “unwarranted” travel bans issued by the United States against five European individuals involved in fighting digital hatred and misinformation, an EU official has said.
EU Officials Condemn US Move as ‘Intimidation’
Officials from Europe including Emmanuel Macron accused Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, after the travel bans were placed on figures who have been central to efforts to introduce laws governing American tech companies.
“For too long, European activists have led organised efforts to pressure American platforms to suppress American viewpoints they disagree with,” stated a senior US official in a social media post. “The current administration will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”
Widespread Condemnation Across Europe
Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives joined the French president in condemning the move.
The restrictions were enacted this week on a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as four activists fighting false information, including two in Germany and two in the UK.
A Deepening Dispute Over Regulation
The DSA is viewed by US officials as a type of speech restriction, whereas EU authorities argue the rules are necessary to combat hate speech and disinformation.
This disagreement risks becoming a facet of a far wider existing political and ideological clash between the current US administration and Europe.
