Early Saturday, accounts surfaced of significant blasts shaking the Iranian capital, following claims from Israeli officials that it had carried out a preemptive strike.
Loud Blasts and Plumes of Smoke Reported in the Heart of Tehran
According to eyewitness accounts, two loud blasts were heard in Tehran on Saturday morning. Simultaneously, columns of thick smoke were seen billowing over central and eastern districts of the Iranian capital.
“The nature of explosions indicates that this is a strike involving missiles,” one news agency reported, though it did not initially provide further details.
Context: Rising Tensions and Prior Developments
The incident occurs against a background of sharply increased strains in the Middle East. Key developments leading up to this attack involve:
- US Military Buildup: A massive buildup of US naval forces in the Middle East, featuring the movement of aircraft carriers.
- Diplomatic Negotiations: Latest discussions between the US and Iranian officials on Tehran's nuclear programme ended inconclusively, with suggestions of more talks planned.
- Public Statements: Before the attack, a senior US official had labeled Iran as “the world’s number one sponsor of terror” and delivered threats regarding its weapons development.
- Ultimatum: Allegedly, a time limit of roughly two weeks had been presented to Iran to resolve the nuclear dispute or face serious repercussions.
Reaction from Tehran
Reacting to prior accusations, Iranian authorities had accused the US of spreading “falsehoods” about its defensive capabilities. They rejected claims about missile development and casualty figures as baseless.
The situation remains fast-moving, with additional reports expected as events unfold.
