Presence Film
Soderbergh pushes his film-making abilities with this clever paranormal narrative shot entirely from the perspective of a ghost. After a clan featuring mother Rebekah and her distressed teen Chloe moves into their fresh home, the filming device – representing the ghost – tracks their movements. The daughter appears aware of the poltergeist, and it seems defensive toward her. But why? It's a fun idea that remains concise, with a twist that may be unexpected. October 11th, afternoon and evening times, the Sky channel
This Self-Referential Film
Cage embraces his cult stardom through this meta comedy caper. He plays a narcissistic film star called Nicolas Cage who takes on a $1m payday to attend a celebration on the Spanish island for the wealthy superfan Javi. Recruited by government spies to spy on the suspected cartel boss, the actor's unconventional method is put to the test. Saturday 11 October, prime time, Channel 4
The Black Phone
Derrickson's contained scarefest remains effective despite the lack of a continuation. Set in 1978 Denver, a series of disappearances has rendered the children frightened. Once Finney gets captured by the villain and locked up in a cellar, he dreads a fatal end. But the disconnected phone in the room keeps ringing, with ghostly voices providing assistance, while the prophetic visions from his sibling Gwen may be his salvation. A solid creepfest. Saturday 11 October, 10.50pm, the Film4 channel
This Dramatic Portrait
In the battle between God and Mammon, the victory is clear for greed in Michael Showalter's brilliantly over-the-top biopic of the disgraced religious broadcaster plus her lawbreaking partner. Andrew Garfield plays the greedy Jim, who proclaims initially, asserting religious justification for riches. He and Tammy Faye begin capitalizing on the nation's spiritual convictions. It's a spectacle of poor styling, bad makeup and insincerity, though Jessica Chastain achieves to show the character as a sympathetic figure. Tuesday 14 October, 1.15am, Film4
Black Bag
This week's another release from the filmmaker is a espionage tale as tight similar to the collars sported by Michael Fassbender's intelligence officer. He receives a mission to discover a double agent within their ranks from five suspects – among them is Kathryn, played by Cate Blanchett. Both actors are masters of deadpan cool, leading to a delightful psychological game of fact versus fiction takes place. Additional actors take part the smart espionage amusement. Friday 17 October, multiple time slots, Sky Cinema
