The Iconic Puzzle Game Couldn't Win at This Gaming Ceremony — A New Category Might Solve This

As any major prize-giving event nears, you'll find a clamor to include additional classifications to acknowledge unsung work and fill the spirits of fans with niche passions.

Another commentator previously argued for a horror game category. That would rule. The same goes for tabletop games, this being a passionate advocate's mission. But they will have to forgive me for pushing forward since similar to dedicated enthusiasts, I have a cast-iron argument backing this proposal remains most pressing and significant. The demand is this: We need a classification for brain-teasing titles.

The Genre Classification Challenge

Classifying creative works is not a science; opinions vary greatly, and it will always generate discussions and end in fuzzy definitions. There’s a reason film award organizations steer clear of genre categories. However, it represents an unavoidable compromise in the world of video games, showing incredible range they barely qualify one unified medium.

For comprehensive acknowledgment of achievement in video games to receive acknowledgment, and for games of all stripes to have a chance for representation, genre categories are essential.

Present Award Structure

Leading game ceremonies offer these genre categories for Action-oriented games, Action/Adventure, RPG experiences, Combat games, Simulation and strategy titles, plus athletic and racing experiences. Between them, these six categories successfully include numerous genres, allowing placement for numerous titles.

This doesn't apply to logic-based experiences. No appropriate category exists to put them. Think about these outstanding current releases, each quite distinct: structural challenges of one title, intense tile-matching from another release, thought-provoking social scenarios in another game. What category would fit them among existing types? Unfortunately, nowhere.

Acknowledgment Issues

Numerous examples exist excellent brain-teasers published annually without proper recognition during gaming ceremonies, except when they manage to fit award groups including Mobile Game, Virtual reality experiences, and the highly challenging independent game categories.

  • A renowned logic title wasn’t nominated in any category that year
  • Another creative title was excluded that year
  • Popular arranging title got ignored in 2021
  • Only a few logic titles scraped into niche award types

Value of Brain-Teasers

Commonly they're compact experiences, yet the craft of the puzzle game carries substantial weight. Famous handheld logic titles count as most engaged experiences worldwide continuing this trend for over a decade.

The famous puzzle experience challenges famous sandbox experiences competing to become most purchased experience; it also contends as greatest title ever. Puzzle games are foundational to the art of video games, and they are in conversation with diverse game types.

The Solution and Justification

Brain-teasers wouldn't encounter that issue. One could readily select five nominees interesting, varied, worthy titles each ceremony simply — actually, with challenge, given the need to exclude numerous deserving experiences.

To emphasize again, these are games that otherwise have no home during prominent ceremonies. Puzzle game makers function at the demanding boundary interactive creation, developing some of the purest expressions of the video game form. Similar to film action specialists, they merit acknowledgment. We shouldn't delay decades.
