Wimbledon Introduces Video Challenge System This Season.

The Championships court with video review technology

The tournament joins the American and Aussie Opens in utilizing video review technology.

Video review systems will be launched at Wimbledon in the upcoming tournament.

Competitors are granted the right to challenge particular decisions from the chair umpire, following the practice already in place at each of the US Open and the Aussie major.

The new system will be operational on Centre Court and the number one court for the duration of the Championships and on the other four show courts when they are hosting singles matches.

This step arrives only a season following the All England Club implemented electronic line calling, which brought an end to the centuries-old tradition of line judges.

Scope of Challenges

Competitors cannot to dispute the accuracy of the ELC system, but are allowed to request the umpire to re-examine other decisions, including:

  • If a ball has double-bounced.
  • Whether a ball made contact with an rival's racket or person during play.
  • Potential hindrance end of a point.

Notably, there is no limit on the number of reviews a player can ask for.

A Recent Example

An illustrative example took place in a recent tournament recently, where Daniil Medvedev initiated the video challenge against Jack Draper.

The British player admitted it was a difficult call for the umpire, but believed his rival had "played the rules effectively."

The umpire viewed a replay and determined the player was guilty of hindrance, granting the point to his opponent.

Broader Adoption

This technology aren't new for Grand Slams. It was adopted at the US Open for two years and the Australian Open since 2025.

Additionally, it is increasingly prevalent on the WTA circuit, and by next season the men's ATP Tour plans to have video reviews implemented at every one of its events.

Additional Innovations

A further innovation at Wimbledon 2025 will be the introduction of visual indicators on displays to support the verbal announcements from the electronic line calling system.

This solves instances where the crowd have sometimes been unsure whether a ball was out or in.

Finally, with exactly 100 days remaining until the start of the Championships, organizers have also announced an expansion in daily attendance at the qualifying competition in the qualifying venue.
